Autism
Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder manifests differently for each person with varying degrees of severity and a wide range of symptoms. Because various areas and functional systems in the brain can be affected, most people with autism have overlapping symptoms with other disorders for example sensory sensitivities (to sound, textures, tastes, light), poor focus, hyperactivity and impulsivity, learning disorders, auditory/language processing deficits, anxiety and/or depression. The brain dysregulation may be the result of too many slow brainwaves causing under functioning of the brain or of too many fast brainwaves causing overstimulation and chaos or inadequate functional connections between brain networks.
Neurofeedback training helps improve the dysregulation in the brain functioning and gives the brain an opportunity to learn to better organise its own activity. This enables the improvement in the brain areas or networks and neural circuits that are misfiring, leading to improved social-emotional awareness, decreased reactivity and better processing of sensory input. Other modalities such as ABA, OT and speech and language therapy can work easier and more efficiently once the person has improved their brain functioning and is more receptive to other therapies’.
